Scholars Portal uses a custom profile of ISO 19115: Geographic Information - Metadata to describe all content loaded into the GeoPortal. Metadata is created by Scholars Portal staff based off of source metadata provided by the data publisher, and/or information found in the dataset itself. Metadata is stored as XML files in the Scholars Portal Marklogic database, where it is accessed by the Scholars GeoPortal.
In the case of high-volume annual collections, metadata creation is automated through the use of a python script and csv. In all other cases, metadata is created manually by the Metadata Librarians and a student employee, with the help of a custom-built online tool called the GISEditor.
