On August 25, 2011, OCUL launched a beta version of the Scholars GeoPortal . Additional development is ongoing in preparation for an official launch in early 2012. BackgroundThe Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) is launching a new geospatial and health informatics storage and data discovery tool that, along with the social science data delivery system <odesi> , will provide a portal to Ontario researchers to access numeric and spatial datasets. The new project is made possible with support from the Government of Ontario through the OntarioBuys initiative, and will be completed in three years. The portal system will provide a secure repository for geospatial files and serve as a health informatics cyberinfrastructure that will also include an integrated online mapping tool to improve the accessibility and ease of use of geo-referenced data and geospatial files. Together, the <odesi> and geospatial portal systems will increase accessibility of data and geospatial files to researchers in all disciplines across Ontario's Universities. For more information, contact Leanne Hindmarch, Data & Geospatial Librarian, Scholars Portal, leanne@scholarsportal.info. Launched in 2012, Scholars GeoPortal is a geospatial data hardware and software infrastructure collaboration that provides access to over 5000 large scale geospatial datasets and over 3 million Ontario aerial images. The GeoPortal provides users with a sophisticated search, discovery, map visualization and analysis tools, to make data readily viewable and downloadable to Ontario researchers. Geospatial data resources include data licensed by Ontario academic libraries, such as land-based vector data (soil, water, cultural points of interest, etc.), provincial and municipal data, census geography, and a large collection of aerial images and orthophotography. Increasingly, the GeoPortal also includes enhanced open data and historical digitized map collections such as topographic maps from OCUL map library collections and project collaborations (see OCUL Historical Topographic Maps Project https://ocul.on.ca/topomaps).
