PSAG Conference Call, June 6, 2007

Agenda and resulting actions

1.       Progress on each of our subgroups:

a.       User panel (Kate, Martha) - Development of a tool continues at UofT.  Meawhile, we can address several aspects:

  • Authentication:  are we concerned about ensuring that only students, faculty, staff of OCUL institutions sign up to be panel members? Based on the lack of issues around unauthenticated signup for SPOT news, we decided not to worry about this.
  • What information do we want people to provide when they sign up for the panel (e.g. school, status, etc).  Action: All consider and comment.
  • What user surveys are on the immediate horizon (e.g. anything relating to MarkLogic?) and what do they tell us about our requirements?  Action: All consider and comment.
  • Should we be exploring other systems, rather than waiting for this development?  Action: Kate will explore this question with other Scholars Portal staff.

b.  Discovery Tools (Martha, Valerie, Stacy, Kate, Jim)

  • Kate is working on writing an answer to the various Scholars Portal Search content-related issues raised by various schools. Action: Kate post on SPOT when completed.
  • Martha reported that UofT will be issuing an RFI relating to a search environment that would include a new catalogue interface as well as federated search capabilities, and that it may be possible to involve other schools in this.  Actions: Martha will keep in touch with this RFI development with SPOD. Jim and Martha will summarize known tools of interest in the federated search realm on the Discovery Tools page and ask other schools to comment.

c.       RACER (Dana, Valerie) - Dana submitted our 'top 5' enhancement requests to Sue McGillivray and will post them on the RACER page

f.        SFX Tuning (Dana, Kate) - see SFX Tuning page; Dana and Kate will be meeting in a few weeks

2.       SFX statistics - what are we doing at our schools with SFX statistics? What would we find helpful to see for OCUL as a whole?  Action: all review stats available and consult with colleagues prior to next call.
